The ancient temple here was known as Pallipurath Mahavishnu temple where the Omnipotent Mahavishnu was being worshipped. The presence of Sr.Bhagavathy is said to have brought here from Kasi by a King of the erstwhile Cochin Dynasty. Firstly Goddess sat in a place called “Elamannu”. Subsequently the Devi continued journey and reached Pazhayannur. The topographical peculiarity, natural vegetation and the inhabitants attracted Devi to sit the Temple near the abode of Mahavishnu. This Temple was known as “Pallipurathappan” Temple . Devi’s presence at Pazhayannur is said to have been occurred in Seventeenth Century. The synopsis and conventional information justify this. Devi resorted a place soon after the entrance where a Banyan tree existed. This place is known as “Sreemoola Sthanam”. After sitting here, Devi gave Darsan in the Thidappally. From that day onwards the Goddess was accepted as guardian deity (“KULA DEIVAM”) of the Kingdom of Cochin . Thus this temple became a connecting link between legend and history. His Higness of Cochin gave all help to develop the Temple . Thereafter theTemple was named as Pazhayannur Bhagavathy Temple .
The amalgamation of Cochin – Travancore took place. The rulers(Kings) accepted Conch Cock & Lamp, the symbol of Bhagavathy as the “ROYAL SYMBOL” of the kingdom. Flying and feeding of Cocks are considered as one of the favourite offerings to Devi for the fulfilment of the wishes and prayers of devotees. When the temple and premises were attacked by enemies Devi took the shape of thousands of Cocks, with long beaks, sharp feat and by creating hard sound, the enemies were defeated . Doing vazhipadu of flying of Cocks & Feeding would help the devotees get rid of evils and enemies.
Generally both Devi and Devan are equally powerful here. Hence equal importance is given.
